Along with Reporters Committee and OTI, we hosted a one-day conference on journalism and digital security last Friday in DC. The panels were full of many of the nation’s best national security reporters, technologists and lawyers.
Jag har inte hunnit titta själv, men vågar tipsa osett: Är du journalist är det med all säkerhet inte bortkastad tid att lägga tre timmar på de här paneldiskussionerna.

The Effects of Mass Surveillance on Journalism | Tow Center for Digital Journalism
Mass surveillance of the kind practiced by the NSA produces a chilling effect on journalism, because sources do not feel they can have a private conversation with a reporter. That’s the message of a group of scholars, journalists, and researchers from Columbia Journalism School and the MIT Center for Civic Media, in a public comment to the Review Group on Intelligence and Communication Technologies convened by President Obama.
“Put plainly, what the NSA is doing is incompatible with the existing law and policy protecting the confidentiality of journalist-‐source communications. This is not merely an incompatibility in spirit, but a series of specific and serious discrepancies between the activities of the intelligence community and existing law, policy, and practice in the rest of the government. Further, the climate of secrecy around mass surveillance activities is itself actively harmful to journalism, as sources cannot know when they might be monitored, or how intercepted information might be used against them.”

Today, the Freedom of the Press Foundation has announced that it has taken over the project, specifically hiring computer security expert James Dolan full-time to maintain the code, help media organizations install the software, and teach them how to use it well. The organization plans to address "virtually all" of the recommendations made by the University of Washington security researchers, and says it’s already addressed a number of specific issues that were pointed out.
Utan att veta något om tekniken bakom svenska mediers leak-tjänster tror jag att många skulle ha nytta av det här.

Jag tycker verkligen om den teknik- och vetenskapsjournalistik som finns i tidningar som Wired och New Scientist (även om den förra inte sällan blir lite för teknikoptimistisk). Så när Matter dök upp på Kickstarter bestämde jag mig genast för att stödja projektet. Målet tycktes vara precis den typen av journalistik jag gillar.
Och när jag bläddrade mig ned bland alternativen fanns där ett som gjorde mig nyfiken också som journalist, inte bara som mediekonsument: För 1000 dollar skulle jag få en livstidsprenumeration på tidningen men framför allt möjligheten att sitta med i de virtuella redaktionsmötena som “gästredaktör”.
Mycket pengar, men jag fattade ett snabbt beslut. Strök en av de konferenser jag hade tänkt besöka under 2012 ur kalendern och valde att satsa fortbildningspengarna på det här istället.
I går publicerades Ring of Steel. Artikeln, om kameror som läser registreringsskyltar på brittiska bilar, blev riktigt bra. Dessutom perfekt tajming, så här några veckor efter det att Prism-skandalen avslöjats. I Ring of Steel visar journalisterna James Bridle och SA Mathieson att det inte bara är på nätet som vi på tveksamma grunder kartläggs av myndigheterna.
Och på vägen, arbetet med artikeln har pågått sedan i juni, har jag lärt mig massor som jag förhoppningsvis kommer att ha glädje av i fortsättningen.
